Blurred Lines: The Relationship Between Art & Architecture

Frieze Academy heads to LA for a panel discussion hosted by wHY Creative Director, Kulapat Yantrasast

15 Jan 2019
6:00pm - 8:00pm
Spring Place Beverly Hills
9800 Wilshire Blvd Beverly Hills
CA 90212 Los Angeles

How do today's artists and architects inspire each other? In what unique ways do they approach principles of light, composition, space and colour? In an age when art can be architectural, does physical functionality still divide the two disciplines? And does today's brand-focused climate threaten creative imagination?

Frieze Academy in Los Angeles presents a panel discussion moderated by leading architect and Creative Director of wHY, Kulapat Yantrasast and including artist, Kathryn Andrews with more speakers to be announced.

Kulapat Yantrasast of wHY will design the bespoke structure for Frieze Los Angeles, launching February 15–17 at Paramount Pictures Studios and celebrating Los Angeles’s position as a global arts capital.

Kulapat Yantrasast is the Founder & Creative Director of wHY, and founded the Los Angeles & New York-based firm in 2004. Born in Bangkok, where he graduated with honors from Chulalongkorn University (1990), Kulapat received both his M.Arch. and Ph.D. degrees in Architecture from the University of Tokyo (1993/1996). Upon graduating, Kulapat worked as Tadao Ando’s close associate for more than seven years in Japan, leading several important US and European museum and culture projects. Regarded as a new generation architect, Kulapat’s interdisciplinary approach to architecture and design is largely shaped and inspired by his passion for food and society, viewing each project as a mix of ingredients that yields its own unique recipe.

Kathryn Andrews was born in 1973 in Mobile, Alabama, and lives and works in Los Angeles. She received her MFA from Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, CA and her BFA from Duke University, Durham, NC. Her work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions including Field Station: Kathryn Andrews, Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI (2017); Kathryn Andrews: Run for President, the Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas, TX (2016) and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Chicago, IL (2015), Sunbathers I & II, The High Line, New York, NY (2016); Kathryn Andrews, TC: Temporary Contemporary, Bass Museum of Art, Miami, FL (2014) among many others.
